The Movie (Spoiler alert)!
Wade Wilson A.K.A Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary. After meeting the love of his life Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), is hit by the bomb known as cancer. This leads to path that will ultimately transform him into the merc with a mouth we know and love, this path just so happens to be the chance to join a "secret government program to turn you into a superhero". This secret program is where Wade's world comes crashing down as Ajax (Ed Skrein) begins to torture Wade to literally within an inch of his life.
With some help from the unlikely allies Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Deadpool uses his new found healing factor and an old friend Weasel (T. J. Miller) to track down Ajax and make him pay for ruining his face!
I thought the movie was great!
I thought that the actual storyline was pretty standard for a cape-flick, which I thought would really affect the movie.. It didn't! Just imagine inserting Deadpool straight into Thor or something, all the same plot points as any other superhero movie with a great Deadpool twist. I thought that Reynolds, Baccarin and Skrein were great throughout and I'm 99.99% certain that Reynolds has completed his transition to Deadpool now! The X-men present in the film were fantastic, and obviously the butt of many'a joke.
For a relatively low budget movie, with a total production budget of $58 million it's very well done. With all blood and gore we expect from anything Deadpool, it's well placed in the movie along with dozens of tiny easter eggs for those who are looking! The intro sequence is fantastic and stylised to Deadpool perfectly, just like the whole "true love montage".
There are some fantastic scenes which really stand out because they feel just like they're lifted from the comics eg. the taxi scenes with D-pool and his taxi driver exchanging stories and giving each other advice. Or Deadpool confusing the X-men by asking which Professor X (James McAvoy or Patrick Stuart) thinks he would make a good addition to the team! Plenty of Deadpool-Wolverine love and jokes, I just wish that Wolverine was actually in the movie.
Though one thing I didn't really enjoy (at first) was the speed of his healing factor. Sure, he's still functionally immortal from what we've seen, but lost limbs and the like are relatively slow to regenerate. However after seeing how this turns out, I was totally okay with it. It leads to a fantastic scene when he gets home!
I'd rate Deadpool an 8/10. It teases at one point the psychosis that we know and love for Deadpool, but never again for the rest of the film. However the humour is on-point, there's no crazy shoe-horning to help it fit in with the larger universe and most of all it's Deadpool! Even the post credits scene is true to Deadpool and it's great. If you're a fan of superhero movies, or Deadpool: Go and see this film! It's fantastic and playful with loads of references and jokes about related comic movies such as Green Lantern, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and loads more.
For those that want this movie, and want more Deadpool on the silver screen.. Keep your eyes open for the post-credits. Because we get a little something from Deadpool about the sequel:
It's gonna have Cable! Deadpool wants X-Force!
